European Academy of Sciences and Arts inducts Dr. Kenan Arnautovic
Semmes Murphey neurosurgeon Dr. Kenan Arnautovic is representing the Clinic with distinction on the world stage.
He was recently elected to the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and is a member of the most prestigious neurological society in the world, the World Academy of Neurological Surgeons (WANS).
This is an honor that the entire team at Semmes Murphey is proud to celebrate. "This is a distinguished recognition. He is a gifted surgeon who takes excellent care of his patients. ", says fellow neurosurgeon Dr. Jason Weaver.
WANS is a non-profit organization that promotes cooperation among the world's leading neurosurgeons for the exchange of knowledge and recognition of major contributions to the specialty. Membership is by invitation only, and just six U.S. neurosurgeons are members.
The European Academy of Sciences and the Arts includes leading scientists dedicated to innovative research and global collaboration to advance the field. It's the equivalent of the U.S. Institute of Medicine and includes only the most accomplished physicians and scientists.
Dr. Arnautovic has formed a reputation with his peers and patients alike. Distinguished neurosurgeon and St. Jude ambassador Dr. Frederick Boop recalls his career alongside Dr. Anautovic, "Kenan and I have known each other for 30 years and been partners for over 20. He is recognized both nationally and internationally for his contributions to neurosurgery, including his recent book on spinal cord tumors, which is recognized around the globe as the authoritative text on the subject. He has had many fellows come to Memphis from around the world to learn from him, he is one of 6 neurosurgeons in the USA to serve as a member of the World Academy of Neurological Surgery, in addition to his recent European honorific. We in Memphis are fortunate to have him as a local resource".
Dr. Arnautovic was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Hercegovina, and graduated at the top of his class from the School of Medicine, University of Sarajevo. He has a master's degree in Neurosurgery on Spinal Trauma and a Ph.D. thesis on Chiari I malformation in adults. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1994, where he completed his second residency in neurosurgery and a skull base fellowship at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock.
Dr. Arnautovic joined Semmes Murphey Clinic in 2003 and serves as a Professor in the Departments of Neurosurgery and Neurology, University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center. He is double-boarded in neurosurgery; in Europe as Diplomat of the Neurosurgery Board of Bosnia and Herzegovina and in the U.S. as Diplomat of the American Board of Neurosurgery.
These honors highlight a culture at Semmes Murphey that greatly values a global and collaborative vision for neuroscience. Semmes Murphey CEO John Lewis elaborates, "Dr. Arnautovic's passion for teaching and collaborating aligns nicely with our Clinic's overall mission. At Semmes Murphey, we have a global vision for advancing the field of neuroscience for everyone, not just those in our own backyard."
