Nir Shimony
Bio
Dr. Nir Shimony earned his undergraduate degree and medical degree from the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology. He did his neurosurgery training at the internationally acclaimed Tel Aviv Medical Center under the direction of Zvi Ram, Shlomi Constantini, Itzhak Fried, and Jonathan Roth. During his residency, he further specialized in Pediatric Neurosurgery and Neuro-Oncology. In his final year of his residency, he was awarded an international observational fellowship at St. Jude under Rick Boop and Paul Klimo. After completing his residency in 2016 and becoming board certified in neurological surgery by the Israeli Neurosurgical Society and Israel Medical Association, he completed his Pediatric Neurosurgery fellowship at the Johns Hopkins University at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital (JHACH) under the guidance of George Jallo in 2017. He spent an additional year at JHACH with Dr. Jallo and Dr. Fernando Vale from the University of South Florida to expand his skills and knowledge in complex brainstem pathologies, spinal cord pathologies and complex epilepsy surgery.
In 2018, Dr. Shimony joined Geisinger Health Commonwealth School of Medicine as the director of pediatric neurosurgery and co-director of epilepsy surgery. He was assistant professor and member of the teaching faculty. He holds an adjunct academic appointment at Johns Hopkins University and is heavily involved in research, teaching, and writing textbooks. His clinical and research areas of expertise include pediatric and epilepsy neurosurgery, tumors and lesions of the brain, brainstem and spinal cord, intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring for advance epilepsy and tumor resection, use of minimally invasive techniques such as advanced endoscopy and keyhole surgeries for brain lesions and intractable epilepsy. Dr. Shimony has published multiple peer-reviewed articles, and book chapters and is co-editor of several textbooks in the field of pediatric neurosurgery and neurooncology.
Dr. Shimony and his wife Hila have three children – Liya, Darya, and Yahav.
